Your Differential Is More Than a Standard Gear Box
Monday, 29 January, 2018 |Maguire Automotive
Your differential is the gearbox that resides in the center of your axle and turns the power that is generated by your engine into forward motion. This happens when that power is sent to the transmission. That is where your gearing happens. Your driveline connects the transmission to your differential and causes it to rotate.
When that happens, the gears in the differential send power down the axle to the wheels, and forward motion is achieved. Your differential is geared so that different amounts of torque can be sent to each wheel simultaneously so that the vehicle isn't fighting itself through a turn. One wheel can spin slower than the other so that the inside wheel isn't trying to pull the car while the outside one is pushing it.
