The two main kinds of oil are synthetic and conventional. Synthetic oil is, as it sounds, consists of completely man-made materials. Conventional oil, on the other hand, is made with natural oil with man-made additives. With many things in life, natural is often the better choice. When dealing with motor oil, however, synthetic actually offers more protection. That's why synthetic is preferred in higher-mileage vehicles. Conventional oil is sometimes used in lower-mileage vehicles because it is more cost-effective and still provides a good amount of lubrication.
